A variety of samples from all species are submitted to the microbiology dept. for the isolation of potential pathogens, both bacterial and fungal.
Several investigative methods are employed:-
Direct microscopy using various stains to identify Bacterial species.
Culture to allow bacterial multiplication under aerobic, microaerophilic and anaerobic conditions, using a variety of specialised culture media and enrichment broths such as blood culture broths and CEM agar to encourage the growth of more fastidious organisms.
Professional Identification systems are used to enable the quick confirmation of species such as MRSA and Streptococcus equi.equi. (strangles organisms).
Antibiotic sensitivity testing is performed to ensure appropriate antibiotic is used for treatment.
