Bruce Bladon BVM&S Cert EP DESTS Dipl ECVS MRCVS

Partner

Bruce Bladon qualified as a vet from Edinburgh University in 1988.  He spent one year in mixed practice in Hertfordshire and three years in equine practice with Endell Veterinary Group in Salisbury, before joining Blackman & O'Gorman (as it was then) in 1992.  In 1995 he left to undertake a residency training in equine surgery at the University of Bristol, and he rejoined O'Gorman Slater and Main after the three year position.  He has several post graduate qualifications; a Certificate of Equine Practice in 1992, Certificate of Equine Surgery in 1996, Diploma of Equine Soft Tissue Surgery in 1999 and finally Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2001.  He has been a RCVS registered specialist in Equine Surgery since 2000.

Bruce's passion has been equine surgery and surgical disease of the horse.  He has presented the results of this work extensively, at scientific meetings throughout the UK and the world.  He was a keynote speaker at the South African Equine Veterinary Association conference in 2008 and has presented at the British Equine Veterinary Association conference and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons congress on many occasions.  He has published widely as well, including in the respected peer reviewed journals Equine Veterinary Journal and Veterinary Surgery.

He is usually to be found in his office at the practice, and does not go outside, except in the summer.  He is one of three surgeons who provide the 24 hour surgical expertise to the practice, ensuring that there is always a Board Certified surgeon on hand to operate, should a horse require it, any time, day or night.


Filipe De Oliveira BVSc MRCVS

Partner

Fil graduated from Bristol University in 1997. He joined the practice in 2005 and became a partner in 2011.

His work has revolved around Stud Medicine and Reproduction since graduation.He has worked in world renowned studs in Newmarket and Australia and included a stint working with top class thoroughbreds and endurance horses in Dubai.  His career has afforded him the luxury of working with the thoroughbred from before conception to success on the racing track. 

He has a special interest in stud medicine, artificial insemination and foal medicine.  This involves working with many different breeds from warmbloods and Thoroughbreds to Shetlands.


David Mathieson BVM&S MRCVS

Partner

David qualified from Edinburgh in 1986. He spent 2 years in mixed practice in Wellingborough, Northants. Following this he spent a year in Wetherby and then two and a half years in equine practice in Essex. He joined Donnington Grove in 1992 and became a partner in 1994.

His main interests are racehorse practice and sports medicine encompassing respiratory disease and lameness.  He has lectured at the British Equine Veterinary Association Congress on respiratory disease in the racehorse.


Charlie Schreiber BVetMed MRCVS

Partner

Charlie graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1988 and after brief periods in mixed and 1st opinion horse practice, joined O'Gorman, Slater and Main in 1993. Since then, he has worked as an ambulatory vet in the racing, sports and leisure areas of the practice, with Widget, his faithful terrier never far behind.

He has recently become a member of British Equine Veterinary Association council, and represents them on the BHA vet committee, giving him an ear and voice in these influential bodies.

He is responsible for assessing of nurses studying for the REVN qualification.

He also demonstrates at the Equine Cardiology course annually, and has an interest in cardiorespiratory medicine and thoroughbred yearling saleswork.


Alastair Welch BVM&S CertVA MRCVS

Partner

Alastair graduated from Edinburgh University in 1999. Following a spell in mixed practice he then completed an internship at The Liphook Equine Hospital. He then worked for 2 years in equine practice in Surrey. He joined the practice in 2004 and became a partner in 2011. He splits his time between racing work and internal medicine.

He is also heavily involved in sales radiography and was awarded the certificate of veterinary anaesthesia in 2004.


Olivia Bacon BVSc MRCVS

Assistant

Olivia graduated from the University of Bristol in 2011. She went on to work at Newmarket Equine Hospital for just over two years. She joined the practice in 2014 as a member of the ambulatory team. Olivia has a particular interest in lameness investigation. 


Marc Collas BVSc BSc CertAVP(ESO) MRCVS

Assistant

Marc graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2013. He went on to work at a mixed practice in North Wales for a year before moving to Buckinghamshire where he chose to specialise in equines before returning to Donnington Grove. 

Marc is interested in lameness investigations and surgery. He holds a certificate in equine orthopaedic surgery.


Elisabetta Giorio DVM MRCVS

Assistant

Elisabetta qualified in 2006 at the University of Padova.  She served her internship with us in 2008 and returned in April 2011 as a fully fledged Equine Assistant.


Alix Jackson BVetMed MRCVS

Assistant

Alix qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2006. She returned to the practice to join the ambulatory team in 2009 having previously completed a hospital internship with us. She has an interest in anaesthesia and internal medicine and has recently completed a certificate in advanced veterinary practice. Alix is also involved in nurse training and has hosted client education evenings with other vets at the practice. She has also undertaken fundraising for the practice's favourite charities.


Nicole Jones MA VetMB CertVA CertEM(IntMed) MRCVS

Assistant

Nicole graduated from Cambridge University in 1992, before working in mixed practice for a year and subsequently completing an internship at the Royal Veterinary College in Anaesthesia and Orthopaedics.  She joined the practice in 1994. Post graduate qualifications includes a certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Certificate in Equine Medicine (Internal Medicine).

She qualified in Germany as a Veterinary Chiropractor, with the International Academy of Veterinary Chiropractic aiming to explore a more holistic approach to diagnosis and management of back and neck issues.

Nicole is particularly interested in sports horse lameness and poor performance, with a strong interest in dressage born out of being an advanced dressage rider and producer of sports horses.

Her other professional interests are preventative health in competition yards, encompassing respiratory medicine and orthopaedic investigations.


Alastair Kay BVSc MS Diplomate ACVS MRCVS

Assistant

We welcome Alastair as a colleague with a breadth of surgical and diagnostic experience in all aspects of lameness and poor performance. Alastair graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1998. He then entered equine private practice for 4 years prior to working in specialised referral practice in Newmarket and Lexington (KY) before completing an equine surgical residency and masters' degree at The Ohio State University (USA) in 2008. In 2009 Alastair was accepted into the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and since that time has worked as a surgeon in referral institutions and private practices in the US and UK dealing with racehorses, sports and pleasure horses. 

Alastair is interested in all aspects of equine orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery, especially that related to the foal and adult performance horse. Alastair has presented at numerous national and international veterinary conferences, has instructed and examined equine veterinary students and residents enrolled to the discipline of equine surgery whilst contributing to the veterinary literature to enhance equine care and welfare. Alastair is also a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. 


Kate McGovern BVetMed CertEM(Int.Med) MS DACVIM DipECEIM MRCVS

Kate graduated from the Royal Vet College, London in 2005 and spent a year working in mixed practice in Somerset. She then completed the internship at Donnington Grove and stayed at the practice following this for a total of 2 1/2 years. After spending some time locuming for several ambulatory practices, she completed a 3 year residency training program in Illinois, USA in equine internal medicine. This allowed her to achieve American board certification as a specialist in Large Animal Internal Medicine as well as a Masters degree. She has publications in several peer reviewed journals and has presented data at several international conferences. In 2013 she became a European Specialist in equine internal medicine.

Kate rejoined the practice in February 2013 as an internal medicine clinician and is based in the clinic. She has specific interests in gastrointestinal disease, critical care and neonatology. 

 


Robyn Miles BVetMed(Hons) CertAVP(ESM) MRCVS

Assistant

Robyn qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2008. Following this she went to Morocco to work with equids for a charity. Following her stint abroad, she went to work for an equine practice in Kent for five years before heading to Scone, Australia for a stud season. Robyn's main interests are stud work and medicine and she has completed an certificate in advanced veterinary practice in equine stud medicine.

Henry O'Neill MVB DVM MS Dipl. ACVS MRCVS

Graduated: Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin, 2005

Further Qualifications: Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons; Masters of science (Michigan 2012), Member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

After graduating, Henry went into mixed animal practice for a number of years in Northern Ireland. An opportunity then arose to travel to England and complete an 18-month equine internship at Donnington Grove during 2008-2009. Inspired by this experience, he then got placed in an equine surgical training program at Michigan State University, under the tutelage or Dr John Stick. Upon successfully completing the surgery board exams, Henry returned to Donnington Grove as a fully boarded horse surgeon. Although conducting all forms of surgery and lameness within the hospital, Henry's particular interests are in equine respiratory, orthopaedic and colic surgery. Henry is delighted to be back in Berkshire and part of the surgical team here at Donnington Grove.


Giorgio Ricardi DVM MRCVS

Assistant

Giorgio qualified in Veterinary Medicine from the university of Turin in 1989. After an internship in Equine Surgery at the Animal Health Trust in 1991-1992 he settled in Pisa, Tuscany where he spent many more years in private practice further developing his interests in equine lameness and surgery.

More recently Giorgio started traveling to the Middle East for work and after an 18 month spell in the Emirates working for a large stable that was involved in flat and endurance racing, he made his way back to Europe and joined Donnington Grove in January 2016.

Giorgi past President of FEEVA, The Federation of European Equine Veterinary Associations and sits on the board of ESVOT, the European Society of Veterinary Orthopedics and Traumatology.


Carly McGuire DVM MRCVS

Intern

Carly graduated from St Georges University, Grenada in 2015 before joining Donnington Grove as an intern.


Lucy Carmichael

Intern

Lucy graduated from Bristol University in 2016 before joining Donnington Grove as an intern.


Abbie Norman

Intern

Abbie joined Donnington Grove in April 2017 as an intern after graduating from Liverpool University. Before joining the practice Abbie worked for small animal charities in London and Sri Lanka as well as travelling and seeing equine practice in New Zealand. Abbie has a keen interest in all aspects of equine clinical practice but especially likes medicine. When not at work Abbie enjoys playing polo and running.


Karen Brewer (Office Manager)

Equine Office

Karen joined the practice in 2001, initially on a one year work placement as part of her degree in Equine Studies at Warwickshire College/Coventry University.   On completion of her degree in 2003 she returned to the practice where she now holds the role of Senior Equine Administrator.  

Karen overseas the running of the whole equine office and its numerous and varied tasks.  A keen rider, (although this has taken a back seat since the arrival of her two children), and horse racing fan.  Karen has two horses, Quiz a 32 yr old very hairy pony and Bert a 17.2hh Irish hunter.


Rosie Scott

Equine Office

Rosie joined the equine office in September 2009 after having worked in the veterinary industry in Lambourn for just under two years.

Rosie does a variety of different duties in the office including passport applications, markings and vetting forms.

Before returning to education in the UK, Rosie worked as head groom for an international show jumper based in Germany and competed successfully in dressage.


Sophie Whittle

Equine Office

Sophie joined the practice in 2009 after finishing college and is the youngest member of the Equine Office Team. Sophie has a varied role including accounts, processing images and paperwork for Thoroughbred Sales as well as handling exports. She is also a point of contact for insurance claim queries. 

In her spare time Sophie enjoys visiting friends and looking after her dog Scrappy. 


Kerry Cox

Equine Office

Kerry joined the practice in 2003 after leaving school. She successfully completed her nursing qualifications and worked as a qualified small animal nurse for nine years. Kerry returned to the practice as a secretary in the equine office on her return from maternity leave.

When Kerry is not busy looking after her two (soon to be three) children, she is usually down the stables with Samba the Thoroughbred and Penny the Shetland.


Mireille Cook

Equine Office

Mireille joined the practice in 2013 as a Part Time member of the Equine Secretarial team. She is well accustomed to horses, having grown up on a riding school and has ridden and instructed most of her life. When she is not at work she spends her time riding, attempting to teach her children to ride and playing hockey. 


Alex Dance

Equine Office

Alex joined the Practice in April 2017. Alex enjoys competing regularly throughout the eventing season on her horse Arty; she also has a 5 year old ex-race horse called Harry and two little ponies Turbo and Jack. Alex lives at home with her boyfriend and Jack Russell puppy called Yogi Bear and a Springer Spaniel called Georgie. 


Elizabeth Figg REVN (Senior Equine Nurse)

Nurse

Elizabeth joined Donnington Grove Veterinary Group, formally O'Gorman Slater Main & Partners in 2003, as a trainee nurse. Before joining the practice she completed an HND in Equine Science and worked for a professional show jumping rider.  She qualified as an Equine Veterinary Nurse in 2006 and took over as head equine nurse soon after.  Lizzie heads the Equine Department, looking after the day to day running of the team, nurse training, assessing and all importantly keeping the vets in check!  In 2012 Lizzie was elected onto the RCVS Veterinary Nursing Council and has subsequently also joined the RCVS Education Committee and Fitness to Practice Commitee.  Outside of work Lizzie is out in the countryside enjoying time with her 3 dogs and horse, gardening, making cakes and looking after numerous chickens and ducks!


Sheena Eames REVN

Nurse

Sheena joined the practice in June 2011. Sheena has worked with horses for many years and has already completed several equine course studies, including an NVQ level 3 in equine management. Sheena qualified as an equine nurse in 2015 and has since been promoted to head theatre nurse. She has a keen interest in equine theatre and diagnostic imaging as well as caring for our critical care patients.

Outside work Sheena enjoys running, making soft furnishings, going to the gym and looking after her 8 year old Jack Russell Terrier Tia.


Mary Simcock REVN

Nurse

Mary joined the practice in November 2011 ready to take on a new challenge. Mary is now a fully qualified Equine Nurse.

After traveling around the world she settled for 2 1/2 years in Canada where she started working with horses. Back in the UK she cared for horses in a show jumping yard. Currently she is training her horse for show jumping and lives in Lambourn. 


Lisa Spencer

Nurse

Lisa joined the practice in 2002 as a part time nurse.  She is qualified as Small Animal Nurse however she works in the Equine Department.  She is a calming influence on all the staff when things are busy, she looks out for the younger members of staff and always has a kind word for everyone.

Lisa lives with her husband Adrian and children.  Thankfully Lisa manages to combine her hectic home life with work at the practice.  


Laura Arlott REVN

Laura joined the practice in 2012. She qualified as an equine nurse in 2016.

Laura is particularly interested in critical care cases and foal nursing.

In her spare time, Laura is walking her dogs Molly and Lottie or looking after her pet pony Harry. She is happily married to Ed, they often go fishing together.


Emma Saunders REVN

Nurse

Emma joined the practice in June 2013 and is studying to be a qualified Equine Nurse. Emma likes to help with lameness examinations at the practice.

Outside of work Emma enjoys hunting her horse Catalina, swimming and walking Woody the Border Terrier.


Nikki Broocks

Nurse

Nikki joined the practice in July 2013 as part of the equine team. She is currently studying at Hartpury College to become a fully qualified equine nurse. Nikki really enjoys going out in the x-ray van as she gets to meet with the clients face to face.

Outside of work Nikki enjoys caring for her horse Bertie and walking her dog Annie through the Berkshire countryside.


Dee Hayes

Nurse

Dee joined the practice in March 2014. She had previously completed her BHS exams 1-3 in her native Ireland. Dee enjoys looking after the inpatients here at the surgery especially nursing the foals.

Before joining the practice Dee worked in racing in Australia before coming back to the UK to work at a large showjumping stud in Newbury. Outside of work Dee enjoys competing her horse Coco in dressage and looking after her Miniature Schnazer Jake.


Flo Widdowson-Jones

Nurse

Flo joined the practice in September 2014 where she originally worked in the yard. She moved over to the equine nursing team in November 2014. She is now studying for her Equine Nurse qualification at Hartpury college. Flo loves taking care of our patients here at the hospital, she loves all horses of every shape and size.

When not in work Flo is found at the stables looking after her pony Sandy. She also enjoys live music and walking her three dogs.


Leah James

Nurse

Leah joined the practice in January 2015. Before joining the equine nursing team Leah worked as a mental health care assistant in her native Wales. She is currently studying to be an Equine Nurse at Hartpury College and really enjoys nursing foals.

Leah has two dogs called Steven and Mimi and a horse called Leo. 


Holly Brown

Nurse

Holly joined the practice in June 2015. Holly previously studied equine at Hartpury College and completed her BHS exams before working as a groom in eventing and racing. She is now in her first year of training as an equine veterinary nurse.

 

Holly enjoys emergencies out of hours, bone scanning and surgery. 

 

Holly has an ex-racehorse of her own that she is currently retraining. She also enjoys beating and netball.


Nathalie Luckhurst

Nurse

Nathalie joined the practice in 2015. Nathalie had previously gained a degree in Equine Studies and achieved her Masters in Equine Behaviour, performance and training. Her interests and in medical nursing and imaging.

Out of work Nathalie is a gym enthusiast. She also loves to travel and enjoys spending time with her horse.

Anne Marie Slade REVN (Yard Manager)

Yard Staff

Anne-Marie joined the practice in October 2004 as a trainee equine nurse, she has since qualified and moved across to the yard to fill the yard manager position which she started in June 2013.

She has previously worked in Italy as a competition groom to an Olympic rider as well as looking after event horses and traveling the Italian dressage circuit. Anne-Marie enjoys the challenge of her new role and in her spare time she enjoys gardening and a glass or two of red wine. 


Lisa Pounds

Lisa joined the practice in 2007 as part of the yard team.

Lisa has worked in livery yards and enjoys hacking her horse and doing some unaffiliated competitions. Lisa has an keen interest in dog agility and attends many local shows with her five dogs, she enjoys camping and the lifestyle the showing circuit can provide.


Heidi Appleby

Heidi joined the practice in November 2011 as part of the yard team.

Heidi worked on a stud yard previously and enjoys working with foals and youngstock. Heidi has an active social life and has obvious vocal talents, you can often hear her singing on the yard.


Lisa Kent

Lisa joined the practice in December 2013 as part of the yard team.

She has previously worked in dressage yards and wanted a new challenge. Lisa has an active role in her Amateur Dramatics society and often takes part in plays and pantomimes. We often see her learning her lines and practicing her dance moves.


Hollie French Simonds

Yard Staff

Hollie joined the practice in December 2014 as part of the yard team. 

Hollie previously worked as a groom for an international showjumper and went to many shows on the UK circuit. Hollie owns a lovely Irish Sports Horse and enjoys affiliated showjumping. She also likes listening to live music and going to music festivals when shes not walking her Dalmation. 


Jessica Dewey

Jess joined the practice in September 2015 as part of the yard team. 

Jess has ridden since a young age and has worked with horses since leaving school. Jess had a Thoroughbred x Irish Draft with whom she competed at local unaffiliated shows and events. She now enjoys training her Jack Russell puppy called Tyler. 


Emma Carter

Yard Staff

Emma joined the practice in June 2016. Emma has previously worked in a racehorse rehabilitation centre and found this rewarding and challenging, she especially enjoyed seeing the horses learn new skills and progressing well in their new careers.

Emma has a coloured cob called Molly, they enjoy going on sponsored rides together. 


Lucy Butler

Yard Staff

Lucy joined the practice in 2013 as part of the yard team.

She has previously worked in flat racing and is a competent rider, she now works on a part time basis and covers weekends and bank holidays. Lucy is currently at college training to be a human nurse.
