Newbury races

The practice provides two of the three vets on duty at each of the 35 days racing held at Newbury during the calendar year. The racecourse is a large galloping track with good gravel drainage, a good watering system and excellent turf management which make it a safe and fair track on which to race. Racedays consequently attract large fields of high quality horses, but despite this, the track has a low injury rate for the number of runners.

Due to the high profile nature of the work and the need to make decisions under the pressure of emergency situations, all vets attending have at least five years experience and will have been trained on the casualty management courses organised by the Association of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons. The veterinary team will be led on raceday by one of the Partners, and procedures are coordinated by on-course radio intercom.

Duties on a raceday centre around assessing the wellbeing of horses racing and attending to distressed or injured horses. The vets are available for attendance of minor injuries, post race lameness assessments and endoscopy. During each race the vets are posted to different parts of the course to provide access and immediate attendance to injured horses.

Initial assessment of the horse will allow a decision to be made with regards to suitable ongoing treatment. Those suspected of sustaining serious injury can be removed from the course using a low loading ambulance with video linkage to the driver, and can either be taken to the racecourse stables or for more serious cases, direct to our clinic, which is only a further 10 minutes away. Here diagnostic options of radiography, ultrasound and scintigraphy are available to assess the severity of injury and prognosis. Full surgical facilities are also available should they be required.

In addition to racing, the practice also provides other services and support to the local horse riding community. Vets from the practice attend local Point-to-Point events, Highclere Horse Trials and the Newbury Show, as well as providing weekend cover at many local Riding Club, Pony Club and Hunt events.
